All Hail King Gyanendra.

Al had been in the country all of 2 hours before I broke the news to him "dude, I need to get out of this city. Get some rest and we are leaving for the mountains in 2 days. Deal with it." We went to see Nibban, my Nepali teacher, who was going to help us get the best prices for permits and travel arrangements into the Himalayas. Nibban introduced us to his good friend who runs a trekking company next door. We were then informed about a new government law that goes into effect starting tomorrow. "tomorrow?" As of the 27th, you can no longer trek solo in the country, you must have a guide, you must plan it through a government approved trekking company, and you must purchase the new government permits. It seems the king wants to squeeze every last rupee out of the tourists as he possibly can. After an agonizing 5 hours of haggling over costs and fees related to this new law, we folded and hired a guide, despite our resistance. I crossed the street to the ATM and took out a cool fifty thousand rupees. It was quite a feeling to be walking around with $50,000.00 in my pocket. Too bad it only amounted to about $600US. We paid up and got the plans together. The good news was we were able to plan not only the Annapurna trek, he also got us a good deal on both our Everest trek and jungle safari for later this winter. More than anything I am just happy to get out into the mountains. The king can have my money.

You probably won't get this until you get back from the mountains because of the drastic time difference,6:20AM here and 4:05PM there. But all is well here. Lily sleeps with your clothes every night and she loves being in the car because it smells like you. I just started giving her a piece of cheese each day and she loves it. I also bought her a big bone from the butcher, it costs like 6.00
and I thought it would keep her busy for a while. I put her outside to enjoy it , checked on her 5 min. later and the bone was nowhere to be found .
Lily was on the cable tied to the deck and she couldn't go more than 20 ft. or so. Sally and I looked for an hour and we could not find any dug up areas or where she could have put the darn thing. I vaguely remember you telling me that if Gave her a bone she would bury if . I just want to know how she did it so dam quick and so well ,no trace of where it could be. Hey , can you believe the price of a stinking bone LOL
We all miss you much but are happy for you and are really enjoying your blog and pictures AMAZING!!!!!!
I left a comment on Al's blog , Glad he got there safely and that you are traveling together now. PLEASE be careful in the mountains (it's not N.H.) I know your well trained but its just a lot more intense. I love the book, and I'm almost done with it. Great story but like anything else there are some bits of information I would have been better off not knowing, like about altitude sickness. UGH , look if you start to get severe headaches, nausea, dizziness, take the medicine but then you need to drink a LOT of water because when you take the med. as it dehydrates you.
OK enough said Go and have the time of your life Be careful , take lots and lots of pictures. I love you and miss you and I can hardly wait to hear the stories of the mountains and the village people. Love you much MOM

    Hey Casey!
It sounds like your adventure is pretty incredible over there. For someone who loves mountains, Nepal must be the place to go, and I enjoy the pictures and reading about your adventures.
South Africa is cool, or more appropriately, blazing hot. There are lots of mountains here and I have done lots of hiking, but I definitely envy your Nepal adventures.
I went up to visit Nauman the week before I came to SA and apparently it was the same day that you did your presidential traverse. The hut crew said I just missed you. But it was neat to go see my old site and see how many of the trees I planted survived.
I have exactly one month left in SA today, and let me just say, to use and Emilyism, I am about ready to shoot myself since I miss Molly so much (we are still together). But other than that, things are going well and I hope you are enjoying your trip and I hope you are looking foward to a third season of caretaking (you know you're coming back...).
    Take care!
    -Sean
